Career Day at Atfalati Ridge Elementary

Sixth graders at Atfalati Ridge Elementary had a special career day on Friday, February 21, 2025 through the combined planning efforts of Washington County Chamber of Commerce, Atfalati Ridge school counselor Alicia Johnson, and the Hillsboro School District's Career and College Pathways program. Career professionals that included: an Intel Engineer, an AI computer programmer, an attorney, a City of Hillsboro Land Surveyor/Project Manager, a Washington County Sheriff, a Hillsboro Hops Promotions Coordinator, an Actor/Trainer, a Librarian from North Plains Library, a City of Hillsboro Safe-Routes-to-School Coordinator, a Ceramics Artist/Teacher, an Epson Engineer and a Pilot/Flight Instructor met with students one-on-one in small groups to share their experiences. Students asked the following:

  • What education and training did you need in order to start your career?
  • What does a typical day in your career life look like?
  • What skills and qualities are necessary to do this career?
  • How do you use reading, writing, math or science in your career?
  • What elective classes or volunteer activities might help someone interested in this career?
  • What's something exciting or surprising about your career?
